Pomors: Happy People
This film is the result of a long-lasting research of the culture and historical uniqueness of the Pomors living on the White Sea coast. In the past, they inhabited many villages in the whole of the Arkhangelsk Oblast. And yet many of these settlements are abandoned now by people who have immigrated into the cities. Nonetheless, the few remaining are not at all discouraged despite the many issues and unassuming lifestyle they have. Just like their ancestors the modern Pomors are used to working up a sweat every day and going into the sea on self-made boats to catch some fish.
Dmitry Vasyukov
Born in 1958 in Moscow. In 1975 Vasyukov graduated from the Theatre School after Boris Shukin, but has almost never actually worked in theatre. For some time he was an assistant director and second director at “Mosfilm” Studio. In the 1990’s Vasyukov went into advertising. His love for fishing eventually led him to hosting his own TV show Dialogues About Fishing. After the show was canceled, Vasyukov opened an internet store for fishing gear, started printing a thematic weekly newspaper and founded his own film studio “Territoriya rybalki” (Fishing Territory). The studio’s first film was 2008’s made-for-TV Happy People about daily life of Siberian fishermen, which was awarded a prize in the Best Series category of the most important Russian documentary film contest Laurel Branch. Renowned German director Werner Herzog liked the film very much and offered Dmitry to make a full-length theatrical version of the film, which they did in 2010 after renaming the film Happy People: A Year in the Taiga. Vasyukov continued the series with Pomors. Currently he is in post-production of the latest installment of Happy People called Altai.
