Red Runs the Sea

Red Runs the Sea is an authentic portrait of 1960’s Norwegian whalers, shot in and around the waters of Tromso With no actors or narration, the film depicts Norwegian sailors as they say goodbye to their home town and set off to the open sea. As the engine roars and the seagulls scream, as the ship cuts itself a path through the oncoming waves, the sailors chat, have coffee and prepare their harpoon canons for the hunt. The film doesn’t shy away from graphic details. Red really does run the sea.

Most of Peter Poole’s work, including this film, were rescued from being destroyed by the director’s friend Mr. Jussi Flemming Bioern, as the previous heir saw no value in them. Bioern donated the films and photos to Norwegian museums like the whaling museum in the city of Sandefjord. With the support of the latter, Bioern was successful in converting Red Runs the Sea to digital media.

Born in 1937 England, Peter Poole was an film director, adventurer and globetrotter. During his six year stay in Norway (1960-1966) he lived together with the Sami people in Northern Norway and documented their life on film and photo. He joined both seal hunting expeditions, whale hunt and trawl fishing, which he captured on film. He returned to England and after a short period left to work in the film industry in Rhodesia and South Africa. Poole returned back to England after eighteen years in Africa where he worked on numerous film productions. Back in England he worked as a freelance sound recordist mainly for TV news companies. This brought him occasionally back to Scandinavia on spectacular news events like Russian submarine accidents. In 1988 he was part of a TV crew covering the earthquake in Armenia. Peter died in London in 2007 at the age of 70.
