Indian Women on Record
A contemporary female musician embarks on a journey to trace the beginnings of the first expeditions of European sound engineers to pre-independence India, the transitions brought about by the gramophone in the consumption of music and the invaluable contributions of women singers who laid the foundations of what later evolved into the Indian Music industry. Wading through the visual sceneries of Calcutta, Benares and Lucknow, the three important centers of North India Classical music, Indian Women on Record traverses between nostalgia and contemporary music scenario bringing alive the forgotten histories of women singers through interviews with artists, connoisseurs, film industry veterans and experts in the field of music.
Parthiv Shah/ Vidya Shah
Parthiv Shah is a photographer, film maker and a graphic designer. He has made several documentary films, curated exhibitions and has several photo-books to his credit. An alumnus of the National Institute of Design, India, he was invited as a visiting scholar at the SOAS, London University and at the University of California, Davis. He has been awarded a Senior Fellowship in Photography by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Charles Wallace Fellowship, UK and Fulbright Lectureship award to teach at the UCLA, USA. He is the Founder-Director of Centre for Media and Alternative Communication (CMAC).
Vidya is a musician from New Delhi, India. Trained initially in Carnatic music, she later received guidance in the North Indian genres of Khayal (from Shubha Mudgal and Mujahid Hussain Khan), and Thumri, Dadra and Ghazal (from Shanti Hiranand). She has performed at several national and international forums, including the Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior, The Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C., The Asia Society in New York and the Bode Museum in Berlin. Vidya conducts workshops on music appreciation and spiritual traditions in Indian music. She writes on music for several publications and has contributed to the Encyclopædia Britannica. A popular performer and prolific composer, Vidya Shah is a recipient of the Senior Fellowship from the Government of India and the Charles Wallace Award for her project “Women on Record”, a performance highlighting the contributions of women performers in the gramophone era. Indian Women on Record is her debut feature.
