Francilene – Story of a Quebradeira

Synopsys

In North East Brazil 18 million hectares of the Amazonian forest are populated by a particular type of coconut palm, babaջu palm tree. The local inhabitants live off its very precious fruits. The work is mainly done by women, called quebradeiras or babaջu nut breakers. They have fought against the landlords until they achieved the “free babaջu law”, which allows them to enter any land and collect the babaջu nuts. Living on subsistence agriculture is a daily challenge. But women like Francilene will always fight to give their children a better future.

Born in Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy) in 1967, Stefania Donaera lives in Rome. She has been working in the NGO sector for the last ten years focusing mainly in promoting the development issue with media. She has collaborated as executive producer in documentaries in India, Brazil, Guatemala, Mozambique, Tanzania and South Africa. Francilene – Story of a Quebradeira is her first documentary as author and director. Her second documentary Wayward and Stubborn about acid survivors in Bangladesh has been selected for the Aperture Film Festival in Melbourne, the Teheran Film Festival and the Days of Ethnograpic Film in Slovenia. The documentary has been awarded at the “A corto di donne” Film Festival in Pozzuoli with the First Prize of the Students jury and with the special mention from the official jury. Stefania is a contributor for Vanityfair.it, Huffington Post Italy, Repubblica.it, Vita and DonnEuropa.it.
